Child’s Play Charity

This Year’s Child’s Play Charity is underway. Here is a description from their site: “Since 2003, gamers have banded together through registered Seattle-based charity, Child’s Play. Over a million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America and the world have been collected since our inception.”

Video game players tend to get a bad rep because of the media’s great job of highlighting a few bad stories…

New Latest available.

The new “Latest” Release contains the following major changes:
* In the Edit Coordinate dialog (double-click on one), links to Google Maps and Geocaching.com work! Check them out!
* A dialog will pop up asking which CacheList you want to transfer to your GPS, instead of defaulting to all.
* You can edit existing Caches by double clicking on them. (This is also a good way to view the extended Geocaching.com information.)
* gpsbabel is now embedded in the App bundle. You don’t have to locate it, I’ll always put it there.

- File -> Open has “.LOC” listed as an option, but it doesn’t work yet.

0.2.4 is going to be around the corner. Let me know if you run into problems with this (or any) of the “latest” releases.

Get the latest bugs, er, features.

Since this software is in constant development, I thought I’d start releasing my “in between versions.” These are basically the builds I use while I’m busy breaking the development code to do something new. If you run a “latest” release, please let me know what issues you encounter. From now on, they’ll simply be put at this link:
http://www.cmiyc.com/dl/MacCaching_latest-build.dmg.zip.

LOC to GPX Converter

geocaching.com uses LOC files for its caches. If you are a premium member, then you have access to the GPX files. MacCaching was made around the GPX files. You can load a single cache or you import a pocket query. Initially, MacCaching didn’t support LOC files, so I created this wrapper around gpsbabel.

It is now a standalone LOC to GPX Converter for OS X (2.7mb).
Simply drop your LOC file onto the program’s window and a GPX will be generated.

No caching at the Virgin Island National Parks

Officials for the Virgin Island National Parks (VINP) are concerned about the effect Geocaching has on their parks. The officials appear to want to make things right and find a way to regulate caching. For the time being though, caches aren’t allowed inside of VINP boundries. This article serves as an important reminder. You can not just assume you have permission to place a cache! Public lands like parks are often regulated to protect the land. Even though it is public, you can’t just place caches there.

MacCaching v0.2.3 Released!

This one took me much longer to complete than I had planned. I decided to go back and fix things I was putting off. For example, the Preferences work now and the program won’t crash if you delete your Library. Download v0.2.3 Here.

Arkansas commissioners not ready for Geocaching.

Recently the Game and Fish panel decided not to allow Geocaching permits on agency lands. Doyle Shook, Chief of Wildlife Management, stated they simiply aren’t ready yet.

Makes me wonder if permits will be required for placing caches or finding them.

v0.2.3 is almost ready

Tonight I spent most of time working on usability issues.  For example, now you can select multiple caches to delete or move to a playlist.  Also fixed the navigation in the cache list, so the keyboard’s arrows can be used now.  There was a bug when deleting caches from the main library.  They didn’t get deleted from the Cachelist.

I’ll package up another release once I finish with the Preferences Manager (1/2 done).
